To the Editor:

The NCGNP “Research Review: Driving Safety for Older Adults” in the September/October 2005 issue of Geriatric Nursing (Resnick, Geriatric Nursing 2005;26:300-1) reminded me of a resource that has useful educational and assessment resources related to this topic. The Web site of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a division of the U.S. Department of Transportation, includes a link to the American Medical Association’s publication, Assessing and Counseling Older Drivers. This publication is located online at http://www.nhtsa.gov/people/injury/olddrive/OlderDriversBook/pages/Introduction.html as well as at AMA’s Older Drivers Project Web site http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/category/8925.html and also contains materials for improving safety and quality of life of those who need assistance with transportation planning.

This guide discusses the ethical implications of assessing driving impairment and offers many health education resources for promoting driver safety. Assessing and Counseling Older Drivers and driver safety brochures specific to various health conditions are available online and in print. To order print copies, go to NHTSA traffic safety materials catalog at http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/people/outreach/media/catalog/Index.cfm. I highly recommend these resources.
